Artistic Director Riku Lehtopolku

Kuopio Dance Festival will produce contemporary dance performance with dance schools, bringing together large group of dance students. This work will create temporary architecture inside the Kuopio cityscape. Premiere is part of the festival opening on 10th of June in 2020. Choreographer is Mr. Riku Lehtopolku, the Artistic Director of Kuopio Dance Festival. Dance schools can apply to this performance starting November 1st. After the selection process, Lehtopolku will tour chosen schools in Finland and other Nordic Countries and teach the concept and the movement language of the work. During the spring, participants should study the piece independently at their own schools.

”For long, my dream has been to create work that is located in the city. Also, my wish is to create model, which opposite to comparison and confrontation, would invite dance students together at memorable destination. Festival milieu is great framework for the project. At the same time program and course selection offers vastly other possibilities to meet dance enthusiasts.” Lehtopolku says.

Dance Schools on Stage continues as a part of the festival program. Participating groups will be selected based on the applications. After the performance at the festival, each group will get feedback from jury, led by Riku Lehtopolku. Review will be carried out in cooperation with The Association of Dance Institutes in Finland STOPP ry. Popular on Stage -afternoons have reached annually about 80 applicant groups from Finland and other Nordic Countries. Approximately one fourth of the applicants have been invited to the review.
