Active cultural town

The oldest and largest international dance festival in the Nordic Countries, Kuopio Dance Festival was first organized in 1970.

Located in Eastern Finland, Kuopio already had the pedigree of a cultural town.Towards the end of 1960s, ideas of founding a summer festival in Kuopio started to gain ground. There was a multitude of theatre and music festivals in Finland already, but something different was needed.

The whole story of how the festival first begun is told on the pages of our Anniversary book
