Due to the coronavirus situation, The Finnish Government has extended previously imposed restrictions and it will affect on all large public events in the near future. Consequently, Kuopio Dance Festival, planned to begin on 10th of June, has been canceled. During the autumn, festival organisation has planned to bring other dance related program to Kuopio region.
”Restrictions given by Finnish Government speak for the severity of the situation. Therefore, the festival has been canceled force majeure. Coronavirus brings uncertainty, and what happens after May is not clear. If we had to cancel at the very last moment, it would have impacts on festival’s economy. We want to be responsible event organization and the health of our audience, artists, partners, volunteers and employees is the most important issue at the moment”, states associations’s chairman of the board Kirsi Soininen.
Kuopio Dance Festival has been organized without discontinuity since 1970. This year’s programme would have been the first for new Artistic Director, Riku Lehtopolku.
”Part of the programme planned for this summer will be postponed to summer 2021. This pandemic has faced the whole world and will leave collective scars. To heal, arts have essential signification. After the social distancing it is even more vital to gain access for the live interaction. Kuopio Dance Festival can contribute new altrenatives and meeting points for the audience under these uncommon circumstances", says Lehtopolku.
Following festivals will take place during 16. – 22.6.2021 and 15. – 21.6.2022. Arrangements for the summer 2021 have already begun.
”Cancellation will have its’ effects on hundreds of contracts we are dealing with. It is necessay that we all support each other and look to the future, together we will survive. Of course, it is sad to cancel the programme, which already gained excited reception from the public. It is however utmost important, that we always consider health and safety first. And, we have good plans for the future”, says Festival Director Anna Pitkänen.
