to be chor. Hanna Brotherus

Hanna Brotherus is an interesting and distinctive choreographer in the Finnish dance scene. Her latest work “to be” opens a unique perspective of a woman's life cycle. Sini Länsivuori´s (Tero Saarinen Company) stage presence is full of enormous power as well as fragile sensitivity. Current, past and future form a harmonious ensemble through the video featuring 8 year-old Lorenia Lönnqvist and 81 year-old Ritva Kattelus.

“In the media, the female body is sadly far too often objectified and preyed upon. In dance, a woman’s desire and strength, her carnality and sexuality, humanity and mortality are endlessly interesting themes. As a middle-aged woman, I contemplate motherhood and daughterhood, the links between the women of my family, getting older and the inevitability of death. I believe it’s important to bring a woman’s place – the one she occupies privately and in society – into the center of the work”, tells Hanna Brotherus about her new work.
