41th Kuopio Dance Festival 17.−23.6.2010
Artistic Director Jorma Uotinen
PRESS RELEASE 18.02.2010
Courses at the Kuopio Dance Festival are taught by world class stars and choreographers. Last year, more than 700 people attended the courses and the aim is to reach the same number this year as well. Altogether there will be approximately sixty dance courses during the Festival week.
The varied course programme focuses on children and young people, offering courses in street dance, contemporary dance, ballet and jazz dance.
Kids' Park Jam is intended for 4 to 6 years old dancers, while 7 to 12 year-olds have a dance workshop to look forward to. The boys' residential course for ages 9 to 18 will be organised as a Nordic collaboration, with 16 to 18 year old girls being allowed in for the first time.
There will also be several short courses lasting a few days. The new events this summer will be circus and BrainDance, which is specifically intended for teachers and those working with children.
Professionals will have a chance to enjoy a wider range of courses, too, as the Austrian choreographer Robert Sher-Machherndl will be one of the instructors to take contemporary dancers, the advanced, and over 15 year-olds into the world of ballet.
Sher-Machherndl has been described by the New York Times as one of the choreographers of interest, and the United States have granted the founder of Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet a permanent visa as an alien with special abilities.
The Artistic Director of the Festival, Jorma Uotinen, will instruct professionals in the Black Water Workshop. The Artistic Director of Granhøj Dans, Palle Granhøj, and the trainer with Cullberg Ballet, Lisa Drake, will teach at the Festival as well.
